How the 2027 COLA works

Each October the Social Security Administration sets the cost-of-living adjustment from the rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI-W) between the third quarter of last year and this year. For 2027 that figure is 3.6%, the largest increase since 2023.

Congress then passes the annual Veterans Compensation COLA Act, which applies the same percentage to VA disability compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC), and special monthly compensation. VA rounds each veteran-alone rate to the cent. For ratings below 100%, the extra amounts for a spouse, children, and parents are rounded down to the whole dollar.

Frequently asked questions

How much will VA disability pay in 2027?

With a 3.6% COLA, a veteran rated 100% with no dependents would receive $4,080.37 a month in 2027, up from $3,938.58. At 10% the rate would be $186.92, at 50% it would be $1,173.68, and at 70% it would be $1,873.55. These are projections until VA publishes its official 2027 table.

When do the 2027 VA disability rates take effect?

The new rates take effect December 1, 2026. Because January 1 is a federal holiday, the first payment at the new rate arrives on Thursday, December 31, 2026.

Is the 2027 VA COLA 3.6%?

The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 on October 14, 2026. Congress passes a Veterans COLA act each year that applies the same percentage to VA disability compensation, and VA then publishes its official rate tables, usually around December 1.

Do I need to do anything to get the 2027 increase?

No. The COLA is applied automatically to every veteran receiving disability compensation. You do not need to file anything or contact VA.

Why do some 2027 dependent amounts end in .00?

For ratings below 100%, VA calculates the dependent amounts as a share of the 100% amount and rounds down to the whole dollar. That is why, for example, the added amount for each extra child at 70% is a round number while the 100% amount has cents.
