VA C&P Exam Tips: How to Prepare and What to Say

The Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam is the moment that most determines your VA disability rating. A single appointment — often lasting 20–45 minutes — produces a report that a VA rater uses to decide your percentage. Understanding how to prepare and what to say can mean thousands of dollars per year.

Before the Exam

Review your claims file: Request your C-file (claims file) so you know what evidence the VA already has. The examiner will review your service treatment records, so make sure everything relevant is in the record.

Write down your symptoms: Before the exam, write out a specific list of how each condition affects you. Include how it affects your ability to work, sleep, exercise, care for yourself, and maintain relationships.

Don't take pain medication before orthopedic exams: The examiner needs to see your actual range of motion. If you take pain killers before the exam, you may move better than you normally would — leading to an underrating.

During the Exam: What to Say

Describe your worst days. Veterans instinctively downplay their symptoms — military culture trains people to push through pain and not complain. The C&P exam is not the time for that. Describe how bad things get, not how well you cope.

Be specific about work impact. Have you been fired because of your condition? Left jobs? Had performance problems? Can you no longer do your old occupation? These facts matter for your rating.

For mental health exams: The examiner will probe your social relationships, ability to work, daily functioning, and emotional state. Be honest about panic attacks, avoidance behaviors, nightmares, relationship problems, and suicidal ideation if applicable. These determine the difference between a 30% and 70% PTSD rating.

For orthopedic exams: When the examiner measures your range of motion, stop at the point where you feel pain — not where your joint physically stops moving. Pain on motion can increase your rating. Say "that's where it hurts" when it hurts.

After the Exam

You can request a copy of the C&P exam report from the VA. Review it carefully. If the examiner's findings are inaccurate — for example, the report says you denied having nightmares but you do — you can submit a rebuttal statement and private medical opinion to counter the report on appeal.

Common Mistakes That Cost Veterans Money

  • Saying "I'm doing fine" when you're not
  • Not mentioning every symptom of every condition
  • Going to the exam medicated so symptoms appear less severe
  • Missing the exam and not rescheduling
  • Not submitting buddy statements ahead of time
  • Accepting the first rating without reviewing the C&P report for errors

DBQs: Disability Benefits Questionnaires

Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) are the actual forms examiners fill out during C&P exams. Many DBQs are publicly available — you can bring a completed DBQ from your own private doctor to the VA as part of your claim. This gives you control over how your condition is documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VA C&P exam?

A Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam is a medical examination the VA orders to evaluate your disability claim. The examiner produces a report that the VA rater uses to assign your disability rating.

What happens if I miss my C&P exam?

Missing a C&P exam without rescheduling can result in the VA denying your claim or reducing your rating. If you cannot attend, call the scheduling number immediately and request a reschedule.

Should I describe my worst days at a C&P exam?

Yes. Describe the day-to-day reality of your condition including your worst days, not your best days or average days. Veterans commonly minimize symptoms, which leads to lower ratings.

Can I bring someone to my C&P exam?

You can generally bring a support person, though the examiner may or may not allow them in the room during the evaluation. Regardless, you can submit a buddy statement from that person to the VA to supplement the exam report.
